How to Scan Documents and Send a Fax From Your iPhone

Free built-in scanning in Notes and Files, plus when a dedicated scanner and fax app actually helps.

You don't need a scanner or a fax machine. Your iPhone can already scan documents for free. Sending a fax needs a fax service, and that's where an app can help.

1. Scan for free with the Notes app

Open Notes, create a note, tap the camera/paperclip icon and choose Scan Documents. It auto-detects edges and saves a PDF.

2. Or scan in the Files app

In Files, tap the three-dot menu and choose Scan Documents to save a PDF straight into a folder.

3. Get a clean scan

Use good light, a dark contrasting background and hold the phone flat above the page.

4. Combine multiple pages

Keep scanning in the same session to create one multi-page PDF.

5. Sign documents

Use Markup in Files or Mail to add your signature before sending.

6. iPhones can't fax by themselves

Faxing needs a fax service that sends to a phone line. Scanner and fax apps such as Scanner App + FAX provide this, usually with a paid subscription or credits.

7. Check fax app pricing first

Look at per-page or subscription costs and any free-trial auto-renewal, and cancel in Settings > Subscriptions if you don't need it.

8. Protect sensitive documents

Medical, tax or ID documents are private. Read the app's privacy policy and delete scans you no longer need.

9. Keep the confirmation

Save the fax delivery confirmation for your records.

Bonus: Printable Document Sending Checklist

A printable checklist to make sure your scan or fax is complete, legible and confirmed.

How the unlock works: to get the bonus you'll be asked to try one sponsored app or offer from our partner. It's optional, the guide above is complete without it, and the sponsor pays us when you complete their offer. Only do it if the app genuinely interests you.
